In August 2018, we printed 200 white cotton tote bags for Aleksanterin teatteri, with a design for the contemporary dance company Susanna Leinonen Company. A large written message filled the front, with the company name underneath.
The words “Are you one of those they call nasty women?” are arranged over several lines. Most of the lettering is black, while one word appears in red, giving the text a clear point of emphasis.
The stacked lettering follows the upright shape of the bag. Short lines and large capitals turn the sentence into the main graphic, with no separate illustration alongside it.
The company name is much smaller and sits below the message. It identifies the project without competing with the larger words above.
The order used two print colours on one side. Red singles out the word NASTY, while black carries the rest of the message and the company name.
White cotton provides the background for both colours. The contrast comes from the lettering itself and the space between the lines.
The bag has long handles for shoulder carrying and a flat cotton body. The generous printed area leaves room for a full sentence as well as a small company signature.
